Island Girl

Island Girl Poster.jpg

Kiki is a happy and vivacious young girl growing up on the island of Barbados.  She has been taught to listen to her parents and to respect the culture and heritage of the island life around her. Despite this, she has a different goal in mind: to become a successful singer. In her imagination this dream is only accessible within the glitz and glam that is promised in the USA.

She finds comfort in the support of her friend Cecil the Flying Fish and a loyal ally, Sammy the Starfish. They all meet at the end of the dock every day at sunset to sing and dream about the future. After overhearing buzz about a singing competition hosted by KiKi’s idol, Susan Starbright, the friends feel drawn to the daunting challenge. The dream becomes reality when KiKi and Cecil sneak away on a cargo boat to the competition held in New York.

She experiences life in the big city for the first time. Her best friend Cecil also experiences this culture shock as he

navigates the underwater sea life of New York with the local fish. Who knew a fish could have a New York attitude!

The contrast of the two locations makes the duo gain perspective and crave the company of their friends back home. The competition does not create the satisfaction she expected, but instead brings forth emotions KiKi has never confronted. The trip aids her in finding her true self and identity.

In the end, KiKi is stunned to discover that she yearns for the comfort and happiness awaiting her back in her beautiful island home.

This colorful and uplifting story reminds KiKi and us all that “When you’re from an island… there really is no place like home.
